He said to them, ‘Therefore, every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure new things and old things.’ (Matthew 13:52)
At the core of what Jesus is saying here is the claim that whenever a teacher of the law becomes a disciple of the kingdom of heaven, he is granted a heavenly understanding and undergoes a massive transformation in thought and perspective. Such Christian disciple-scribes do not discard the Old Testament scriptures. However, they now know that these scriptures have found their fulfilment in Jesus and, as a result, they are able to dig deep and draw both new and old truths from them (just as Jesus does and as Matthew himself does in his Gospel).
Treasures New And Old believes that the scriptures of the Old Testament are Christian scripture but are also a part of scripture that is neglected in Christian pulpits. We also believe that to neglect the Old Testament scriptures is to truncate the gospel. For this reason this website is devoted to exploring the theory and practice of preaching the Old Testament and to do so in such ways so as to not only encourage preaching from the Old Testament, but also help Christian preachers to ‘bring out of their treasure things new and old’. |
